Getting there

• T1 tram: the Karaköy and Tophane stops put you on the waterfront; Sultanahmet is four stops away.

• Ferries from the Karaköy piers cross to Kadıköy and Üsküdar in about fifteen minutes.
• On foot: over the Galata Bridge to Eminönü in ten minutes, or uphill to Galata Tower in about the same.

What Karaköy is, and what it was

For most of the last two centuries Karaköy was Istanbul's port and money district: banks on the hill, ships at the quay, wholesale trade in the streets between. Much of that infrastructure is still visible in the architecture, and some of it still functions — the lighting and hardware streets behind the waterfront are working trade blocks, not a design concept.

The food layered on top of that history is unusually varied for a small area. Sweet shops and coffee roasters served the port. Meyhanes served dock workers and then artists. Breakfast houses arrived with the design studios of the 2010s, and the cruise terminal that opened in 2021 brought a wave of high-turnover waterfront restaurants that are best ignored.

• Nargile cafés that add a service charge per person on top of the pipe. Ask first.

Local tips

• Karaköy works as a base: you can walk to Galata, tram to the old city, and ferry to Kadıköy without ever taking a taxi.
• The neighborhood changes character by altitude. Waterfront is for visitors, mid-slope is for breakfast and design shops, and the streets right below Galata are residential.
• Sunset here looks straight down the Bosphorus. The ferry to Kadıköy at that hour is the cheapest cruise in the city.
• Come hungry at 9am. Breakfast is the neighborhood's strongest meal, and it stops mattering after noon.
